La Romana, Dominican Republic – It is no fluke, year after year the Blue Marlin continue to show up off the DR. Most boats are fishing out of Casa De Campo Marina at the moment, but by the end of May, many will move up north to Cap Cana Marina in Punta Cana. We have yet to see the eye-popping numbers of Blue Marlin this season, where double digit releases were routinely being reported, but the numbers are still very good. Let us not forget, these are Blue Marlin, not bonita.
The Top Boat over the last week was Chasin Tail who went 6-11 on Blue Marlin, which in most harbors would be record day. Both Betsy and Fa La Me turned in 5 Blue Marlin days, with Fa La Me going 5-7 and Betsy 5-5. Contango and J-Hook managed 4 Blue Marlin each, but both saw 7+ Blue Marlin in their spread.
It is easy to get spoiled very quickly in some of these top fisheries, but it should not take away from how special they are. We are very lucky here in the US to have a fishery like the Dominican Republic within reach. We can only hope the bite continues as the season progresses.
