The Billfish Report is counting down its Top 10 Billfisheries of the Year with our #9 Billfishery Cap Cana. Criteria for our Top 10 include fish numbers, variety of billfish species, reports, average size of fish, length of season and number of boats fishing. With over 5,000 Billfish Reports submitted to us in 2019 from around the World, to even be considered for our Top 10 makes a fishery one of the best!
Cap Cana, Dominican Republic – Year after Year, this fishery has maintained its status as one of the Best Fisheries in the World to catch a Blue Marlin. They have been frequent flyers in our Top 10, making it in 2017 and 2016, after we rightfully split Casa de Campo and Cap Cana into two different fisheries. We have enjoyed watching a few fisheries in particular blossom into more well known worldwide destinations over the years. We take great pride in our promotions of all fisheries, but the “DR” is particularly interesting. This fishery has literally done a “180” going from a great White Marlin destination 15+ Years ago, to now one of the most reliable and more prolific Blue Marlin fisheries. The White Marlin are still there, but the Blue Marlin have shoved them aside and for good reason.
We want to commend Marina Cap Cana for their dedication to reporting and keeping statistics on their fishery. While we tried to get as many reports as possible, given all of the fisheries we cover, it is literally impossible to get them all. With that said, the Marina reported a total of 1,049 Blue Marlin, 972 White Marlin, 99 Sailfish and 5 Spearfish released in 2019. By our numbers, that lead to thirty-two (32) reports over 5+ Blue Marlin in a Day, which was the Best in the Atlantic and the Best in the World for 2019. We did not get any 10+ Days, but Reel Lax had the best day going 9-13 on Blue Marlin.
While we called this a Blue Marlin dominant fishery, the White Marlin sure filled in the gaps, releasing almost as many White Marlin as Blue Marlin. We did not get a report of any 10+ White Marlin days, we did get a handful of 5+ White Marlin reports, with the best day coming off the Prisa going 8-13.
As you can see the numbers drop off significantly after Blue Marlin and White Marlin, but this fishery did produce three (3) Grand Slams. We did not receive any reports of a Blue Marlin over 500 lbs.
Congratulations to the Cap Cana, our #9 Billfishery for 2019.
