Kona, Hawaii – With such consistent summertime fishing off the Big Island, sometimes it takes a little more to get our attention. Even a probably clear bias towards these waters, I am not sure we talk enough about this fishery. Known really as a “big fish” fishery, when the summertime wave of Blue Marlin show up, it can be a numbers fishery too.
That is exactly what the summer of 2015 has started off with, numbers! Most boats are getting 3-4 shots a day on Blue Marlin with the Marlin Magic, Marlin Magic II both getting eight (8) hook-ups, resulting in five (5) released for both. (There were literally more 2-3 Blue Marlin days than we can report on, but we don’t want to take away from that great fishing as we have all come home empty handed). Don’t worry about Kona’s reputation changing anytime soon for the big girls though as Sea Genie II caught a 700, Fire Hatt a 685, Marlin Magic II a 600 and Blue Hawaii a 600. Top it off with Capt. Chip Van Mols’ 1,226 lbs. Blue Marlin on the Luna and you can retain your crown.
We are only a month into the official summer and the Tournament season is just beginning. Our favorite month is actually August, so should you have an itch for some great Blue Marlin fishing, you need to give Kona a shot.
* We wanted to give some special recognition to Carol Lynne on the Marlin Magic II and Capt. Bryan Toney on the Marlin Magic. Between the two of them, they have the Kona Coast well represented with some exceptional photography. Our thanks to you both for sharing your talents.
